I started giving my doughter solids when she was around 4 months old. The key is to listen to your child and take it very slow.
I started her with rice cereal. The first time, I gave her just a little bit like a tip of the spoon. The intervals were like once every 2 or 3 days. The important thing is that you have to give her one type of food for 3 days and watch for allergic signs. You also have to look for other signs like baby’s tolerance of one food; some get gassy with one food that you would not think might be gassy.
I know this because I had experienced it with my son; he was very quick in getting solids, when he was 7 months old he was almost having what we were having except that his was lower in salt and mushier.
On the contrary, my daughter needs more time; she cannot go his brother’s pase. She needs more time to adjust to one food or another; the simplest food can give her stomach ache.
By now, she has everything in a very small amounts, but she is still in to 2 solids a day; she has breakfast and lunch, I noticed that if she has dinner after 4pm she won’t be able to sleep. She is stuffed and cranky.
I am against jar foods, as much as they say it doesn’t have any preservatives; I simply can’t do it. To me, it is impossible to put turkey and pasta mashed in a jar and expect it to be good to eat after even 1 day.
I perfer to make her food myself, as I did for my son. It couldn’t be easier, when I’m making food for grownups, I make a simpler version first without salt and low in oil, take as much as I think she will have. I cook ours as usual; hers I leave on the stove to cook very slowly then add the vegetables I want to get in to her. When it is ready, I just blend it in this one handle blender, and feed her as I would a bowl of cereal.
