Baby bottles and BPA

You would think in all the things that can have a dangerous chemical baby bottles are safe because they are intended for use of very fragile human beings. It’s a shame that we, humans have produced things that are harmful for environment and us. Unfortunately we went too far and I hope that all these talks about being green and living green make some changes, otherwise I’m too scared of the future of our children to dare think about it.

I grew up in a world that taught me that, not everything is what the media make it look like and you have to be smart and read between the lines or see beneath the surface. When the news of plastic containers and water bottles and baby bottles broadcasted I didn’t panick simply didn’t use my containers that had a recycling #7 and didn’t warm up anything in them in microwave.

Last night I panicked, it was on the news that Canada had announced BPA a dangerous chemical and most of big chain stores like The Bay, Canadian Tire, and Sports Check removed the baby bottles and water bottles from their stores. This was serious. My 15months old daughter was still on bottle and she loved it. I had to make a decision, either to ignore the news and continue the bottle, buy glass bottles, or just wean her from the bottle.

The idea of my daughter going to puberty earlier is nothing that I can live with, so continuing the bottle was out of the question. My son is always after his sister’s bottle, playing with her; there is the risk of them getting hurt with a glass bottle, the last option for me was to wean her.  I didn’t make this decision until this morning, she was using Gerber baby bottles and Nuk nipples. There are no numbers at the bottom of Gerber baby bottles, so I googled it. Guess what, Gerber bottles and Nuk nipples both had BPA and were recommended to stop using them.

She had her last bottle today at around 9am, and cried and moaned the rest of the day, it was so hard breaking for me to see her that way. I really intended to let her enjoy her bottle until she was 2 years old just like her brother, but I guess there was a reason for this to happen.

It was time for my daughter to graduate from bottle but I feel for mothers of new borns.

Until later,

One Response to Baby bottles and BPA

  1. I try to stay away from plastic bottles. Glass bottles can be used effectively under supervision however I would recommend using silicone bottles.
