Last night I received an e-mail from a friend in Iran, at first I couldn’t believe what I was reading. Thought this must be a joke, who in sound mind does that? This must be a good photo shop job and a person with a sick sense of humor. So I Googled the subject and after seeing many other resources with the same news and pictures, I was convinced that unfortunately for the rest of the world this is true.
Yes Hamas planned a mass wedding for 450 couples, up to now there is nothing wrong with a bit of community or national celebration. What makes me sick is that all the brides are 10 years or younger!!!! I can’t really say how old is the youngest some of these kids looked 6 years old to me but none were looking older than 10!!! Here is a picture they took proudly and published to the world.

There is even a video that women and one of the birds talk in Arabic, I don’t know Arabic and unfortunately I couldn’t find a translated video, but they didn’t look like complaining!
I’m not Muslim but I lived in Muslim country (Iran) and most of my friends were Muslims. Yes, there is a law that girls can marry as soon as they get to puberty but at least in Iran; few people still do that. It is something when a family or two decides to marry their daughter in a young age, but 450? Are you kidding me? This is ridicules.
The worst part is that they are proud of it too, as if they want to say to the world; we don’t care how advanced you are and how women think around the world we do this in spite of you. What is this? What do they want to prove?
I look at my daughter playing so carefree and the girls in grade school here, reading, playing and trying different sports living their lives as children and I feel for these newly brides, they are not different just born in a different culture. They have been raised in a way to accept what they have been told by their fathers and then so called husbands, and have no word of their own.
I still can’t get the picture out of my mind, the grooms look like the girl’s father (not even a big brother) So sad, and I don’t think there is any way to stop this from outside. These women and girls should wake up, want better for themselves, and fight for it. Until then this kind of marriages and unfairness will go on, publicly or quietly just few hours of flight from us.
What do you think? How do you feel when you see these picture and video? Do you think there is a way to help take their power back?

How sad for those lil girls… and how disgusting that this is permitted. This is totally unacceptable to our present culture… but there was a time that even here in the U.S. that 10 year olds were permitted to marry… I remember my great-grandmother talking about it.
I feel so sad for those lil girls…

did you see this link:

you can see in the picture several of the men do NOT have young girls walking with them. I hope it’s true that the young girls are NOT the brides
@LaShan
Thank you for your comment, yes there was a time long long time ago that young girls would marry.
@Paintee
Thank you for your input, I looked for something that denied this but couldn’t find it then. You are right some of the men walk by themselves. What made me question the news from the beginning was that the girls were not wearing any he-jab (scarves), but lots of makeup. This is not normal in Islamic world, when a girl reaches puberty they should wear make up. This could be another sign that the girls are not brides, I sure hope so. Although even after I write these words, I have doubts and that’s because, I have first hand experience when my grade school friend at the age of 13 dropped out of school to get married. Well she was 13 right?
That is very upsetting if this story is true. Just because a girl’s body reaches puberty should in no way imply that she has the mental maturity to handle all that goes along with a marriage. Sickening.
I am repulsed beyond words. This makes my skin crawl, and while there was a time when with life expediences being shorter women/girls married younger, they were NOT herded like a cattle in a large group of hundreds to marry men their fathers age without their consent. There were differences.
There were arranged marriages yes, between families; but nothing even remotely as sickening as this.
Sick, Sick, Sick. These girls have been brain washed, and the men involved in this…their fathers, older brothers etc. should be ashamed.
Interesting how this story is not landing on any of the major news websites (NY Times, Time Magazine, CNN, Fox News…etc.)….could it be that we are missing something here….i.e. the little girls are not the brides to be, and if anyone understands arabic, they will realize they are the relatives of the bride/groom hoping to one day be a future bride themselves……..I love how things can be taken out of context simply because of your personal hatred towards these people
@ Wake up people. Thank you for your comment and I wish you had left your name. Your comment made me read my article repeatedly to see how I implied I hate anyone or anything. Hatred is a big word, yes, we as humans like or dislike something but to hate? I don’t know, I don’t even use this word for the foods I don’t like let alone people. To set the record straight I didn’t say I hate or didn’t like anyone or even any culture. I just talked about what I read about in blogosphere and my opinion on it.
Discovered your web blog via bing the other day and absolutely love it. Continue the fantastic work.
