Making Christmas decorations

The other week I volunteered to go to the North Vancouver Museum with our kindergarten class.

While driving a few of my son’s friends to the Museum, I started making joke that there is a store close by and if they need to buy milk or bread for their home. They replied NO, but we like to stop to buy toys. No shock there, right? :)

At the museum their program was to show them how in old times people celebrated Christmas. Watching kids faces was quite interesting when the lady said they didn’t have electricity so they made bright paper chains, or they made their own decorations.

Life without electricity, or stores !!! What are you talking about??!!!

Being there watching these children looking with amazement and awe, was kind of eye opening for me too. I remember making decorations, or living with whatever I had without wanting to buy new things constantly.

What happened from that generation to this, how did we become all consumers. I noticed how many items I buy that I can make them, and I even don’t like shopping. Isn’t that odd??

Having this in mind I decided to teach my children how they can have Christmas beauty without buying it. They had broken most of Christmas ornaments last year so when my son said we need more decorations I told him, I’m not buying any and they should make it themselves.

For the past few days every day after school they sit at their craft table and make decoration after decoration, and they enjoy it. I’m enjoying it too, seeing them so interested and determined to  make the next one even better :) DH is loving it too, each night they have new crafts to show him with excitement.

Christmas craft fair

Today was our last day of craft fair in 2010. We had a great day. I love craft fairs, people are all running around, picking up presents and most are in a good mood. I say most because I’ve saw people who looked like they had a shotgun pointed at them:)

We received a lot of good feedback and a lot of new ideas as well. Because of recommendation by a few people interested in having matching Lunch bags and a few who have dogs and were interested in smaller bags, now we have three new additions to our product line. Insulated Lunch bags, Doggy treat bags, and small jewelery bags which can be used for anything like trail mix or business cards. All of them will be appear on gogobags.ca website soon.

New beginnings

Have you ever tried different things one after another and felt like nothing is going to work? I’ve had this feeling for the past two years when it comes choosing my  next career. I’ve been a travel agent for the past 20 years but since about five years ago, I decided to get out of this dying business. Let’s just say it is very difficult to change your career after 20 years and more difficult to get out of travel business for reason that I wont get into here.

For the past two years I have tried many different possible career paths; baking business, doing personal taxes, graphic design, and so on. It looked to some that I was not taking my career and life seriously, but I’m not a person to just settle for the sake of settling. There is no shame in learning and trying new things until you find what really works for you. That is my philosophy.

It’s been quite an exciting summer and fall for me. Together with the help of my mother, we have started a line of reusable fabric bags called Gogo Bags. Our main product is sandwich and snack bags and fabric cutlery holders.

In celebration of this new chapter in my career life, I’ve decided to change the look and feel of Busy Mom’s Blog. I would like to thank all my faithful readers for their patience with me, and for their invaluable comments.

Gogo Bags

Where should I start? Gogo Bags started with me being obsessed with my son starting full day kinderten. I got the idea of an environmentally friendly reusable sandwich bags during a  sleepless night. I remember that night I was so excited about the idea that I got up to my desk and started writing down the idea and the steps I had to take, and of course I did some web research until dawn.

The next day, I asked my mom to join me on this venture as she is a good sewer and always has creative ideas. We started designing and choosing the fabrics. I worked with health Canada and my fabric distributer to pick the safest fabric for contact with food.

We made many, many different prototypes and tested them until we came up with one design that we liked best. At the beginning, we made the bags mainly for our personal use, but when I received positive feedback from our kindergarten teacher and some of the other parents who had tried them out, we decided to take it to the next level.

As we are going forward I get more excited about our project. I’m excited and proud because we are making a difference although small, but we are doing our part to make it easy for families to reuse.

At the moment we are making sandwich bag, snack bag, cutlery holder, and shopping bags that fold into a valet size pouch. We are designing a few other products which will be out soon.

I like to invite you to visit our website; we’re still developing it so please visit often. Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions or comments.

Think Green.

Thank you Vancouvermom.ca

I’ve always read about the contests and sometimes the result posted on the blog that had the contest. But I never read a thank you from the winner.

So here I am thanking Christine @ Vanocuvermom.ca for the wonderful ticket to Caillou’s show.  The kids and us, we had a blast.
